Success on the Track: 3 Times to the Circle

Patrick Racing has been one of the most successful indycar racing team in history. Our team is proud of its: three Indy 500 wins, two Indy 500 seconds, and 3 National Championship Titles. In total, Patrick Racing has accomplished 33 wins, 154 top five finishes, and 86 top ten, with total purses over $10 million.
   

1973

The 1973 win was the first and most tragic win for the Patrick Racing team won by Gordon Johncock. The race resulted in the deaths of team driver and family friend, Swede Savage, and pit crewmember Armando Teran, whom was struck by a fire truck while running to rescue Swede Savage. Although team member Gordon Johncock went on to win the race, the team was forever changed by the events that occured at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

1982

According the Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame, the 1982 win was the closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history at that time. Gordon Johncock won within 0.16th of second over Rick Mears. The STP Patrick Racing Car, nicknamed the "Wildcat", was the last American made car to win the Indianapolis 500.

1989

The 1989 win with driver, Emerson Fittipaldi, was the first Indianapolis 500 win with a purse over one million dollars. The purse size total cash winnings was $1,001,604 according to the Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame.
